You will have seen from our progress page that the foundation work has started on the blocks at the back of the site, namely blocks 4, 5 and 6. Vertical construction (the actual pillar structures) started at the beginning of April. The ground is now being finished as preparations for the foundations to the other three blocks are being prepared.

The licences for construction were re-submitted, with all the requested changes made, these were essentially to the aesthetics of the clubhouses (minor changes to the look of the exteriors). These applications now go, once again, before the very unwieldy planning commission, which consists of fourteen departments, for approval. Their comments and issuance of the final consent is expected in the very near future. Once these are passed the ground works will ensue and the construction will commence within a month of the granting of the licence.

Mediterrania site

The Marina has a great feel. Already we are seeing the skippers of a number of boats, of varying sizes, availing themselves of the docking and in conjunction with this the on-shore facilities are beginning to open including, in the past weeks, the first restaurant/bar. The marina control centre is also completed. Such has been the demand for The Marina that plans are afoot for an expansion by over 200 berths as shown in these plans.

The Medina/Commercial Area is also progressing rapidly with around 60% of the units taken up, all indications show that this site will lack for nothing that the consumer would like to find, including various high street and luxury brands, car hire, banks, supermarkets, as well as restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

The Golf club house is in its final stages of build and the Nº.1 course, El Palmeral, is looking lush and ready to play.

The Hotels are also progressing well and Barceló, Oasis and Iberostar, the first three, should open within the next few months (There has also been some strong interest by various other international groups to take the final hotel plots, as well as several organisations from Marrakech.

Addoha a Moroccan multi-group has acquired 50% of Fadesa-Maroc and have become the new master planners for the site. Currently they are reviewing all facets of this huge Project but have clearly stated that they intend to concentrate on quality and are committed to creating a world class resort in line with His Majesty - King Mohammed VI’s vision.

Oujda Airport has had a mandate approved to create a number of major improvements. These will allow the air traffic to reach 1.5 million passengers by 2015.

Airlines
flying from a number of current destinations within Europe into Oujda, - Jet Air Fly, Transavia, Atlas Blue and Royal Air Maroc are expanding their schedules. It also appears more than likely, that as soon as the first hotels opens, there will be direct flights from the United Kingdom. (Please check individual air carrier websites periodically for up to date information).

Morocco as a whole

Record breaking tourism numbers of more than 7 million arriving in Morocco were released by the Moroccan government for 2007. A 13% increase in arrivals has been noted plus an indicated 12% jump in tourism revenues to 59 billion dirham, with an increase of 29% from the UK alone.
"Tourism has become the chief source of investments and job creation in the Kingdom, as well as a driving force for sustainable development, contributing to 8% of the country's gross domestic product" says Tourism and Crafts Minister, Mohamed Boussaid.
These figures are a good sign that His Majesty King Mohammed VI's ‘Plan Azur’ is well on course to successfully achieve its target of 10 million tourists by the year 2010. The ministry has also stated an intention to draw up a tourism management plan for 2010 to 2020 which will focus on maintaining quality in the tourism services. There is continued expansion in the infrastructure of the country with further motorways and high speed railways, linking most of the large Moroccan cities to each other.
